Boondocking in the Badlands
Another fun way to camp if you’re around the Wall area is boondocking or dry camping in the Badlands National Park. The site where you can camp is located 6 miles south of Wall, South Dakota, on Highway 240 and about 1 mile from the Pinnacle entrance into the Badlands. When traveling south on Highway 240 from Wall and I-90, you will notice three radio towers up on a hill to the left. You will then turn onto a dirt road leading east until you see the “Badlands Wall.” As Badlands National Park is an open hike park, you can hike or camp off-trail while adhering to the backcountry rules. These rules entail staying half a mile away from any roads or trails and remaining unseen by other visitors. While the entire park is open for exploration, two popular spots for backcountry camping include Deer Haven, accessible via a social trail from the Conata Picnic Area. Deer Haven boasts a 2.5-mile one-way unmarked trail, albeit with a relatively worn pathway to follow.
Additionally, there's the Sage Creek Wilderness Area, accessible from Sage Creek Rim Road. This area is home to the park's bison population, which has created numerous game trails easily navigable from overlook parking areas and Sage Creek Campground. You can choose any trail and set up camp as long as you're half a mile from the road and out of sight. When camping in this area, please exercise caution and remain vigilant. If you encounter wildlife, maintain a distance of at least 100 feet.
Keep in mind that these camping sites offer no amenities, so you will need to bring anything and everything you might need.
